Je Suis Charlie
Dear Mom and Dad,
As I'm sure you know, there has been a tragic incident in Paris recently. A cartoonist, Charlie Hebdo, who was simply expressing his opinion to the world was shot, dead. Along with many others. In short, this occurred because he offended the Muslim religion in the eyes of many people, however the terrorists who shot him, took their offense way too far. I am safe, as I was far away from the incident when it occurred, but I want you both to know that I am on the side of Charlie Hebdo, for his voice deserved to be heard. This is why we have freedom of speech. And if he chose to express his beliefs through a cartoon, then so be it. It should be no different then if he were to have a conversation about it with friends or speak about it aloud in public. My heart goes out to those who were close to him and I ache that for his loss, even though I did not know him personally. I simply believe that opinion deserves to be heard, it deserves to be discussed, and it deserves to be discussed in peace. He may have died, but his ideas are still present and his work has sparked an uprising of ideas in France and around the rest of the world about the Muslim religion, which is what I'm sure he had wanted to happen. He wanted people talking, and they sure are. He may not be here to witness it, but he is here in all of our hearts.

Tuesday, November 19, 2013
